Unhealthy western diets especially those which are high in salt and lacking fruit or fiber are responsible for more deaths around the globe than smoking and hypertension, a study has suggested. Unhealthy food is one of the biggest drivers of cancer, heart diseases, and diabetes. Around 11 million deaths were due to poor diet in 2017 in comparison with smoking that caused 8 million deaths and hypertension triggered around 10 million deaths.
A vast majority of diet-related deaths were due to heart disease followed by cancer and Type 2 Diabetes. Poor diet also causes a huge share in disability The Lancet Journal reported.
The diets that are more closely associated with deaths are probably high in sodium and low in whole grains, fruits, nuts, seeds, and omega-3 Fatty acids. Diets rich in soy food, beans, and other healthy plant sources of proteins will be more beneficial for planetary health.
